Brief:
Social media has become the easiest way for fans from around the world to connect and share their love of football. Manchester United is the most popular English club on social media with over 200 million followers across all channels. Matchday has become a crucial day across these platforms and there is a massive uplift in engagements and interactions with our fans and followers.
Design a compelling matchday poster for the upcoming home game against Bayern Munich which, will help fans connect with the club they love. It should build excitement ahead of a big Champions League match at Old Trafford against a European heavyweight.
The design must feature the following:
• 3 player images
• Fixture information
• Team crests
To be formatted at 4:5, 1:1 and 9:16
The Deliverables:
Taking inspiration from Manchester United’s current social media branding, my goal was to ensure fans are able to instantly identify that these graphics are part of the Champions League style social posts at first glance, as well as ensuring they ‘felt’ Manchester United. I also applied what I know is currently trending in sports design, from market research. (Rounded edges on shapes & assets and use of Serif fonts, complimented by bold Sans Serif fonts. Along with a torn paper/grunge effect.)
Due to the use of the Champions League background; I was conscious of using too many colours ,which could distract the viewer and take away the key purpose of the design – to be informative. This is why I decided to go with black and white for the player imagery, while highlighting Manchester United’s red in the kits and header text.
